Why MacWorld Sucked for me

This is somewhat my fault, but I’ll explain a little more.

I didn’t factor in going to MacWorld until December, 2008, when lots of people started getting excited about it.
I registered online about a month prior to the event because it was cheaper that way. Even if I didn’t go, it would be better than paying a lot more at the door on the day it begins.

In the last few months I’ve been booking flights a week or less before they depart because I normally don’t know where I’m going. This costs more. I should probably begin booking flights to places well in advance and changing the location if need be. That would be cheaper, right?

MacWorld Monday Tweetup
Daynah and Qik setup a tweetup the night before MacWorld opened (for the public). Railei, Viktoriyaa, and I arrived a little late, but we still had time to catch up with Daynah, Justine, Karen, Steve Jobs, and a bunch more.

Keynote Day
I only had an expo pass, so I didn’t need to be up early to see the “PhilNote”. I arrived on the expo floor around noon and I couldn’t find anyone. Tweeting the hashtag #mwsf09 all week didn’t help at all.
Eventually, I bumped in to Geoff Smith. He was with his buddies from Humanety. We walked around the expo for a little bit, and then planned to meetup later for dinner.

Wednesday
I only went to the expo on Wednesday to use the free Wi-Fi to upload my YaffleJuice. It didn’t upload fast enough before I had to leave, so that was a ‘fail moment’. The reason I had to leave was because I was going to The Exploratorium with Coley, Corey, and Adam. Marianne and Josh also joined us. That was fun!
In the evening Brian Shaler treated Rai, Vik, and I to dinner at Mel’s Diner on Mission St. Thanks dude! He then proceeded to drive in to oncoming traffic; good times.
Then I went with Brian to EFF’s 18th birthday party at the DNA Lounge. Yeah, I’m not a fan of clubs. But I donated to the EFF, so that’s a good thing, right?

Thursday
I tweeted with #mwsf09 in an attempt to give away the Griffin AirCurve I won and reviewed at Geoff Smith’s Christmas Party, but no only one person said they wanted it. That person wasn’t at MacWorld. Another ‘fail moment’; I can’t even give stuff away for free.
I headed over to the Apple Store on Stockton Ave to watch Alex Lindsay’s presentation on high quality video for the web. This experience made me so happy. I’m very serious. I was learning and uploading content at mindblowing speeds.

Friday
So, for most of this post I’ve just been referring to my tweets from these days because my memory is that bad. Friday’s tweets seem to have no activities mentioned in them. All I remember is staying up until 5 a.m., waking up around noon, and I guess we got dinner sometime around sunset.

Saturday
Johnny Cupcakes invited SF fans to a free pizza lunch at Blondies. Little did he know over 100 people would show up. There was a line all the way down the street. Two teenage girls in the line behind me were constantly producing the best overheards! I was tapping like a maniac on my iPhone’s notepad to keep up with them all. (I’ll post all of them online somewhere that’s convenient.)
After waiting about an hour, I was given the biggest pizza I’ve ever seen. Me and seven people around me were meant to share it, but when we opened the box it was covered in vegetables like broccoli, carrot, and cucumber. Who puts those ingredients on a pizza? Moreover, only one person grabbed a piece. I wanted to wait to sit down and examine and pick at the pizza.
Rai and Vik met me and soon after everyone went up to Union Square to hang out and chat with Johnny. Rai, Vik, and I each ate a very minimal amount of the pizza; I pretty much only ate the crust off one piece. A girl, Katrina(?), randomly came up to us and asked us what was going on. We exchanged names and she took a slice of pizza with her back to her friends. Nice.
It started to get cold and dark, the girls and I decided to go across to The Cheesecake Factory. I discovered that I’d never been to The Cheesecake Factory before. My gosh, it’s amazing!!!

I just realised that MacWorld concluded on Friday, so you just got a bonus day, Saturday, to drool over.

I’m going to make another post about Why SF Didn’t Live up to the Hype to follow up this one. That will entail some pretty nasty stuff about the Holiday Inn at Civic Center, so get excited about that! :)

(re: EFF) It would have been cooler if more people you already knew were there. I thought it was great once 5+ people I knew showed up.
