Leaving the toilet seat cover down
For almost two years I’ve been leaving the top cover to any toilet seat down; sans public toilets.
This decision began after listening to an episode of the DSC in which Adam mentioned his iPhone falling into the toilet. As we all know, iPhones and water don’t mix.
Then I thought about an old Mythbusters episode I saw where they were testing how many germs you can find on a toothbrush if the toilet cover up or down. It was unsurprising that when the toilet seat cover was up the amount of germs floating around in the bathroom was greatly increased. In general, these germs aren’t going to harm you unless you have an extremely weak immune system. That’s what I assume anyway — I am not a doctor!
Okay, so keeping the lid down reduces germs floating around in the air. Whoop dee doo. The most important part of keeping the toilet seat cover down is to stop electronics falling into the water. This is especially important in countries like the USA where the toilet bowl (the part you sit on) contains much more water than compared to an Australian toilet bowl (comparison video coming soon).
I’m astounded at how many of my friends take electronics (computers, mobile phones, cameras, etc) in to the bathroom/toilet area. ASTOUNDED I tell you!! I’m not surprised when I see people tweeting things like “Ahhhhhhhhh!!! I dropped my iPhone in the toilet!!! Do I put it in white rice or brown rice??! I don’t remember!”
If you get any tips from this story, please make sure it’s the one about leaving the toilet seat cover down (as the title states). It becomes a habit after a month or two.
Trust me, folks. I’ve never dropped my iPhone in a toilet because of this rule. In fact, I’ve never taken my iPhone in the bathroom unless it was to take a photo (MySpace-style! Ha-ta!!).
